So this morning, the gym locker room was playing Drake and this old-ish (55?) man who’d been moaning and saying “Oh, boy” in the shower came up to me and was like “We can agree that America is the only nation that has given up its native culture.”
Ignoring the word “native,” which isn’t a dog whistle I always hear, and assuming on the basis of my gym’s clientele that this was a Fran-Lebowitz-in-Public-Speaking-y argument about, like, the end of opera, I asked what he meant.
“This rap music. It needs no talent. I use the term music loosely.” I told the guy I like rap music.
“We used to be a Christian nation,” he said. My reply was not my debate-camp-graduate finest but I definitely told him what I thought of this idea!
“You’re right,” he said. “I should specify. America is awhite, Christian nation.”
If this line of thinking has gotten to Hell’s Kitchen, I truly may not survive this election!
UPDATE: Just realized this guy was pissed off about DRAKE, the least hard rapper on Earth. Also, Drake is Canadian, not American.
I can’t wait for the premiere of The Comeback on Bravo this June!
